Pair Me Up! Tuesday ~ Team Hector

Formerly known as Team Tuesday, Pair Me Up Tuesday follows the same terms as Team Tuesday. (Sorry for the lack of posting these posts!) I have recently finished one of new favorite fantasy series this year, The Girl of Fire and Thorns Trilogy. So, definitely I choose Lord Hector for Elisa more than ever!

My heart belongs to Lord Hector because:

1. His honor as Captain of the Queen's Guard may be maddening when he can't put his feelings on the forefront but, he does have good intentions.

Hector refers back to his honor to protecting Elisa many times when he knows that technically, he shouldn't have feelings for royalty. His honor blocks all his feelings from showing. But, what I respect about his honor is that, he shows that he cares too much to let his feelings guide him. Hector does his job well but, sometimes he needs to forget about that honor and just love (me) oops, I meant Elisa.

Psst... I'm the one who's rejected.

2. When he loves, he loves hard.

Hector has fallen for Elisa when he found her after she was kidnapped and from that moment on. No matter what Elisa saw with her insecurities about her body and other things, Hector overlooked that and still loved her for her. He's not the type to fall in love for some time and move on, NO, he's the type to love someone for as long as he lives.

3. He's the Captain of the Guard.

Ok, who doesn't ogle their eyes over the captain of the guard? Hector wouldn't be chosen to be the Captain if he didn't have these qualities: loyalty, honesty, physical-ability, fairness, etc. So far, I have my eyes for two characters that are captain of the guard in their books... I am slowly collecting more. *wink*

The champion must not waver.
The champion must not fear.
The gate of darkness closes.

Elisa is a fugitive.

Her enemies have stolen the man she loves, and they await her at the gate of darkness. Her country is on the brink of civil war, with her own soldiers ordered to kill her on sight.

Her Royal Majesty, Queen Lucero-Elisa né Riqueza de Vega, bearer of the Godstone, will lead her three loyal companions deep into the enemy's kingdom, a land of ice and snow and brutal magic, to rescue Hector and win back her throne. Her power grows with every step, and the shocking secrets she will uncover on this, her final journey, could change the course of history.

But that is not all. She has a larger destiny. She must become the champion the world has been waiting for.

Even of those who hate her most.

Fangirling Scale: Reaching for the Stars! (More than ever did I swoon!)

The ice surrounding my bookish heart melted once again for the last installment in The Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy. The Bitter Kingdom lost me from time to time because of endless swooning, uber-happiness, and fangirling at its finest. What can I say, I can't say goodbye to a beloved series (and Hector+Elisa)!

With a clear transition of the events ending the previous book, The Crown of Embers, this book continues following Elisa and her journey to becoming the queen she aspires to be. Being the last book, the reader never jumps into a slowing dead end and ventures into action immediately. The order of how the events are played out is consistent, leading to a happy ending I loved. This is one of the first times I have ever read such a happy ending to a series because usually authors try to end the series with a BANG! (Which sometimes gets me annoyed...) Ms. Carson ends the series with closure and the reader left sad to say a final farewell to the series.

Our young Queen Elisa is still her relatable self and I would say: stronger than ever in The Bitter Kingdom. Elisa clearly has gone through a lot of character development since the beginning of the series where she was an insecure, scared girl and now to a clever, brave young queen I have admired and consider one of my favorite book characters this year. She doesn't lose that girly aspect to her when she is with Hector or her non-subtlety which makes me very thankful to Ms. Carson for creating Elisa. I will never say goodbye to Elisa since I consider one of those characters you will never forget.

I know what you are all waiting for: What about the ROMANCE, Jamie? I will get there twinklers, hold on. First of all, may I ask, Does Hector and Elisa have a ship name? (Yes, my shipping for their relationship has gotten to that level. I will go down with this ship.) I'll call them, Helisa. Away from that, if the events of the last book left you heartbroken, I assure you, The Bitter Kingdom will keep your shipper heart warm and toasty. Their love for each other stays strong to the point where they bring the best in each other. Words cannot express how much their relationship is truly a gift from Ms. Carson. (A new OTP was made.)

I am very sad to say goodbye to this series. The Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy has become one of the best YA fantasy series I have read of all time. I am thankful for picking up this series blindly.(I never do this because somehow I spoil myself! A bad habit, I know...) On to the bigger picture, The GIrl of Fire and Thorns trilogy has touched a special star in my heart and I hope it does the same to you.

Starring... The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson {Review}

10816908She does not know what awaits her at the enemy's gate.

Elisa is a hero.

She led her people to victory over a terrifying, sorcerous army. Her place as the country's ruler should be secure. But it isn't.

Her enemies come at her like ghosts in a dream, from foreign realms and even from within her own court. And her destiny as the chosen one has not yet been fulfilled.

To conquer the power she bears, once and for all, Elisa must follow a trial of long-forgotten—and forbidden—clues, from the deep, hidden catacombs of her own city to the treacherous seas. With her go a one-eyed spy, a traitor, and the man whom—despite everything—she is falling in love with.

If she's lucky, she will return from this journey. But there will be a cost.

Fangirling Scale: Reaching for the Stars!

Newly- Queened Elisa struggles with the power invested upon her. Thinking that power, both magical and royal, is something that she cannot obtain; Elisa and her companions embark on a journey where she discovers the extent of her power and herself. Godstones, love, adventure, Hector, self discovery, and Rae Carson is what perfects the holy number of five (stars!) in this book.

I have to give five stars to The Crown of Embers because the plot, swoon-worthy romance, and pursuit of self-understanding/discovery is just so well written. Development of the characters especially Elisa plays a big factor in this book. Reading her from her start as an insecure girl who didn't imagine to be an unloved future queen was greatly expressed in this book. Elisa evolves into a mature queen for her young age. Her personal growth and struggles was displayed as heart-breaking and empathetic for me because I felt that her voice was authentic. Elisa explains her feelings thoroughly which I enjoyed because I felt that her minor insecurities added on to how I can connect to Elisa more. Elisa is one of the few characters I read in the YA genre where I can personally connect and relate to. So, major thanks to Ms. Carson for creating Elisa!

The next thing I keep fangirling over in this book is Elisa and Hector's relationship. Their relationship moved slowly like how a real romance builds like in a slow burn. Starting as friends in the first book, I like how their feelings for each other was not insta-love or they were not destined for each by some prophecy. (I like these romances too! Oh, never mind, I'm so lovesick when it comes to romance...) (Psst.. In the first book, this may be shocking but, I wasn't swooning for Hector because his mustache always threw me off for some reason.) In The Crown of Embers, their relationship develops into a romance that satisfies my shipper heart and Elisa's doubtful try at love. Although Hector does have his honor to always worry about, I appreciate that Ms. Carson still inputted some scenes with them together. Their comfortability with each other is very genuine as well from their days as friends, leaving me to swoon for them every time. Helisa (My ship name for them), keep going strong, and I will go down with this ship!

While trying to not to have a long review just talking about my swoon for their romance in this book, I will also say that the plot and pace does not drag since new events always act as obstacles for the characters. But, the whole entirety of the book serves as a journey for Elisa because she is trying to understand herself and the power she yields for that every time she uses it, everyone or thing puts it down. Also, while literally laughing at the end and the irony of it, I am SO going to borrow the last book in the Fire and Thorns Trilogy. If you haven't started reading this fantasy series, you are missing out because Ms. Carson's talent outshines all fantasy writers by a long shot.
